Ricki Porter was one of Ballet Nevada’s first Outreach dancers… he started dancing with us at the age of 10 years and didn’t stop until his family moved to Fallon, Nevada. He performed in hundreds of shows… with The Outreach Program, The Nutcracker, Christmas Carol, Oliver!, and many more performances.
He helped us build an 8,000 square foot performing arts center in Reno. Ricki was planning on joining the military and was also engaged to be married. He was only eighteen years old. On Friday, July 21, 2006, Ricki was driving to Reno. His cell phone fell to the floor, so he unbuckled himself for a moment to pick it up… and at that moment a tire blew, causing a major accident. Ricki died as a result of his injuries. On Friday, November 10th Ballet Nevada held "A Celebration of Ricki's Life". We performed dance pieces, songs and readings that were inspired by Ricki, others that have been actually danced by Ricki and yet others that simply celebrate the joy of dancing and music, the way Ricki so enjoyed it! The benefit helped us raise money to aid the Porter family with the medical and funeral expenses.
"The Ricki Porter Scholarship" is used to produce dance pieces that inspire and motivate children to reach for their dreams. This year's scholarship is being used to commission a piece choreographed by Marty Lewis and set on dancers Erin McIntire, Amber Anaya (danced w/ Ricki) and Emma Krump.
